There is no place quite like Charleston for the holidays. Don’t let the mild temperatures fool you – Charleston has holiday cheer in spades with or without the promise of a white Christmas. With so much to see and do during the holiday season, it is no wonder that Charleston has become such a sought-after spot to chase away winter doldrums.
There are nearby festivities abound whether you choose an Isle of Palms or a Kiawah Island property to serve as your holiday home base. Here are some of my favorite holiday events:
Holiday Festival of Lights - USA Today’s “10 Best Holiday Light Shows in America” and not to be missed. 700 light displays in a 3 mile driving tour. Park to visit Santa’s workshop, roast marshmallows, and drink hot chocolate with family and friends.
Charleston Symphony Orchestra Holy City Messiah - Chamber Chorus and guest vocalists perform at three beautiful churches around Charleston – Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, St. Andrews Church in Mt. Pleasant, and St. Theresa the Little Flower Catholic Church in Summerville.
The Sound of Charleston Holiday Concerts - Celebrate Charleston’s musical heritage with a twist at the beautiful and historic Circular Congregational Church in Charleston. We recommend dinner afterward at Halls Chophouse.
Wine Under the Oaks - Wine and bubbles, desserts, food, and cooking demonstrations all with the backdrop of Boone Hall Plantation dressed up in its holiday finest.
- Grand Illumination at Middleton Place - Celebrate the Christmas of 1782 in torch lit gardens and next to warm fires. Watch dramatic reenactments of Arthur Middleton’s return from Philadelphia at the end of the Revolutionary War, culminating with a traditional buffet of early American cuisine and colonial cocktails.
